Teeth Cleaning & Oral Hygiene
The cheapest appointment in dentistry, and the one that decides whether you ever need the expensive ones.
Screened and introduced free, usually within a few hours. Sunny Isles Beach, Florida and the surrounding corridor.
Indications
Book sooner rather than later if
A professional cleaning removes the hardened deposit that brushing cannot, and — done properly — records the measurements that reveal disease long before it becomes symptomatic. The charting matters as much as the polishing.
- Gums bleed when you brush or floss, even occasionally
- It has been more than nine months since your last visit
- Persistent bad breath that mouthwash only temporarily masks
- Visible tartar behind the lower front teeth or along the gum line
- Gums that look puffy, red or rolled rather than firm and pale pink
- You smoke, vape, or are pregnant, diabetic, or on medication that dries the mouth
Good candidate if
- You want charting and numbers, not just a polish
- Gum inflammation has been present for a while
- You are preparing for implants, veneers or orthodontics
- You want a hygiene interval based on your actual risk
No cost, no obligation, no lead list.
The detail
A routine cleaning versus a deep cleaning
The cheapest appointment in dentistry, and the one that decides whether you ever need the expensive ones.
A routine cleaning — prophylaxis — treats a mouth without bone loss. Deposits are removed from crowns and just below the gum, surfaces are polished, and pockets are charted. It takes 45 minutes to an hour, and the charting is the part that determines whether that is still the correct treatment next time.
Scaling and root planing is a different procedure with a different purpose. Where pockets exceed 4mm and radiographs show bone loss, deposits sit on root surfaces below the gum, out of reach of any brush. The roots are cleaned and smoothed under local anaesthetic, usually across two visits by quadrant, followed by reassessment at six to eight weeks. Being sold a deep cleaning without pocket depths and radiographs to justify it is a genuine and common problem — ask to see the numbers.
The sequence
What actually happens, in order.
Timings vary between practices and cases. The order does not — and a plan that skips a step is worth asking about.
Assessment
Pocket depths at six points per tooth, bleeding points, recession, and radiographs at appropriate intervals.
Removal
Ultrasonic and hand instrumentation to remove calculus above and just below the gum line.
Polish and finish
Stain removal by polish or air-polishing, then flossing and, where indicated, fluoride varnish.
Coaching
Technique shown against your own charting — which specific sites you are missing, and what to change.
Interval set
Three, four or six months, set from your measured risk rather than a default.
Getting the right hands
Who should be doing your teeth cleaning.
This is the variable that decides your result, and it is the one you have least ability to assess from the outside.
Not years in dentistry. How many of these they do in a month, and what the difficult ones looked like.
Anyone can photograph a result on delivery day. We want to see it after it has been used.
CBCT, microscope, scanner, printer — whichever this case genuinely requires, on site rather than referred out.
For anything ceramic, the technician is half the result. A dentist who cannot name theirs is outsourcing blind.
Teeth Cleaning FAQ
What people ask us about teeth cleaning.
Including the cost question, answered with a real range rather than a request to call.
Six months suits low-risk mouths. Three to four months is appropriate with a history of periodontal disease, diabetes, smoking, or if you have implants. The interval should follow your charting, not a default booking policy.
A routine cleaning in South Florida is typically $95 to $200. Scaling and root planing runs $200 to $400 per quadrant, so $800 to $1,600 for the full mouth. Most insurance covers two routine cleanings a year in full.
Only if pockets measure 4mm or more with bleeding, and radiographs confirm bone loss or subgingival calculus. Ask to see your pocket chart and the radiographs. A legitimate recommendation is easy to demonstrate; an illegitimate one is not.
It removes surface staining from coffee, tea, wine and tobacco, which often makes teeth look several shades brighter. It does not change the underlying colour of the tooth — that requires whitening.
Bleeding indicates inflammation, which means bacterial plaque is present at that site. Healthy gums do not bleed when instrumented. It typically stops within a week or two of consistent, correct cleaning at home.
